Constellations

Singapore Repertory Theatre 2017

Director: Bruce Guthrie; Lighting Design: Gabriel Chan

Constellations explores the nature of memory, the brain, and our connections to each other within possible parallel universes. What choices might we make differently if we had another chance?

The two characters float on a suspended fragment of time amidst a dark space of possibilities, under a forest of neurons or stars.

I worked closely with lighting designer Gabriel Chan to create a structure of 99 individually controlled LED lights to represent both lead character Marianne’s neural pathways and the multiple universes that the characters lives played out in, and we devised patterns of communication across the structure for each of the different universes.

A horizon line faded in and out, deepening or weakening, horizontally breaking the stage and linking or separating the characters depending on their level of connection and the linearity of time in that particular moment.
